What is a doula?

The word ‘doula’ comes from an ancient greek word meaning servant woman. in the 20th century, it came to describe a non medical birth, pregnancy or post natal worker who fulfils a traditional role of giving practical, physical and emotional support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. doulas help with antenatal preparation, birth planning, physical and emotional support during birth, and help postnatally with things like breastfeeding advice, help with baby, preparing nourishing meals and looking after the parent who has given birth.

who might use a doula?

doula services are for anyone who values the wisdom and assistance of a female presence in her pregnancy, birth space or post natal period. there is a misconception that only a certain type of family use doula support, but the fact is that doulas are more in demand than ever amongst all types of people, because society is beginning to remember that the transition into family life should be empowering for the person giving birth, gentle for the baby, and fulfilling for the rest of the family. I believe that everyone deserves a doula.

is it expensive?

my fee structure and packages can be found here. most doulas offer packages for antenatal care, birth support and postnatal as well as ad-hoc hours or blocks of bookable time. many families feel that prioritising support during this special time of their life is a worthwhile investment, and i can offer as much or as little support as you need. get in touch if my packages don’t quite work for you, and we can come up with a personalised plan.

if you are under 21 or in a vulnerable situation and need support, i offer a limited number of ‘free’ spaces for clients that are unable to pay. please get in touch to find out more.

how do i find out more?

you can book a free 30 minute call with me to chat about how i can support you as your doula. we’ll talk about what kind of support you are looking for (if you’re not sure that’s ok, we’ll work it out together!) and decide what would work best for you.

if you don’t want to wait, you can call me directly and speak to me sooner. i know what it’s like to be excited to start your journey! i also have a contact form here if you’d prefer to write to me.
